Leaves--Porcelain Painting on Tile
THE PLAN
Creating this painting was originally an experiment using real leaves and china paint applied to a wall tile from the hardware store.Texture was created on purpose with the build up of china paint on the yellow area. Also build up of paint was achieved around the perimeter of the leaf that is placed in the foreground. I wanted to see what happens if the paint is left untouched after stamping. The result was a bit of texture that defined the veins of the leaves.
SUPPLIES
- Floor or Wall Tile from Hardware Store
- Leaves
PAINT COLORS- Sap Green or Chartruese
- Brown Green
- Dark Green
- Mixing Yellow
- Finishing Brown
- Rich Brown
- Oil of Copiaba as a Painting Medium
Other closed oils should work just as well.PREPARATION
Clean the surface of your tile. When stamping with leaves I like to rub a little closed oil over the tile and let it rest for a bit.CREATE A DESIGN
This was a random stamping project without any plan. :-)
HAVE FUN PAINTING
First Fire
- Leaves
Paint the back side of a leaf so that the paint builds up on the veins. For interest, the paint was applied rather thick on some of the areas. For interest use a variety of colors on the leaf. Maple leaves were used for this project. On leaf stamping, leaves with lots of texture tend to print well. Blackberry, Geranium and Hydrangea leaves have thick veins that are good for stamping projects.Press the leaf onto the tile with your fingers. Then use a wipe out tool around the edge of the leaf to build up the paint around the leaf. Leave that build up of paint around the edge. Avoid the temptation to smooth out the thick and thin lines. :-)
Second Fire
- Add another leaf
Using the same method as the first fire paint the back of a leaf and press it on a tile. By holding the leaf in place it becomes a stencil. This time leave the leaf in place and with a shader brush, browns and greens to paint background around the leaf. Then wipe out any paint that was pressed onto the leaf in the foreground. Use your wipe out tool to define some of the veins in the background leaf. Also wipe out the stems.Paint more background around the original leaf. Voila! You have finished your leaf stamping project.
Firing the Tile
Fire at Cone 014 on both fires.
